Roles and responsibilities of a key person

‘Being a key person means working towards meeting a whole range of social, spiritual, emotional and intellectual needs in a way that promotes dignity, choice and independence, whilst promoting a caring, healthy, stimulating, safe and secure environment for the child’.

  • Developing close attachments and fostering trust in the children in your care

  • Looking after children’s day-to-day physical needs, such as feeding, nappy changing, toilet learning and administering first aid

  • Providing a range of fun and stimulating activities, from reading stories to messy play

  • Safeguarding children and reporting any concerns

  • Monitoring children’s progress, keeping records, getting ready to start school and reporting back to parents.

  • Some practitioners specialise in working with children who have special needs.
